Undergoing procedures such as a hysterectomy or mastectomy can rob women of feeling integral to sexual experience. Similarly, pelvic radiotherapy can cause vaginal stenosis – shortening and narrowing the vagina – making physical relations painful, if not inconceivable. Sadness, stress and body image problems have the potential to annihilate any libido. Cancer and chemotherapy can cause devastating impacts on a woman’s sexual function throughout treatment and for extended periods after – despite advancements in research into cancer treatment and sexual health, females complain that their issues with intimacy are still disregarded.
