As a result of COVID-19, Singaporeans and the rest of the world slowly but carefully regained a sense of normalcy.

The year 2022 was big for pop culture! In Singapore, big events such as Formula 1 and the ZoukOut Festival made a comeback. And we had a lot to cheer for when the critically acclaimed movie Ajoomma starring Hong Huifang began making waves at the Busan International Film Festival and Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards. The film also represented Singapore’s entry in the Best International Feature Film category for next year’s Oscars, but sadly it didn’t make this year’s shortlist.

Aside from Jurong Bird Park closing, we closely followed Johnny Depp’s Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s saga, mourned Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, obsessed with a specific “Singaporean curry chicken” that appeared in The New York Times, and became even more obsessed with MoonSwatch.

This article revisits some of the stories that captured the imagination and resonated with our readers during 2022 – from health matters to celebrity weddings to a Grammy slap that was heard (and seen) around the world.
