A long-awaited sequel is the fastest movie to reach the box office milestone in 2022.
In just 14 days, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel, The Way Of Water, had global ticket sales of US$1 billion (S$1.35 billion), Variety reported on Wednesday (Dec 28).
In comparison, nine movies released in 2019 crossed that same box office milestone. In comparison, Top Gun: Maverick took 31 days and Jurassic World Dominion took more than four months.
It took The Way Of Water 12 days to reach US$1 billion, compared to Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
With $2.97 billion worldwide, Avatar: The Way Of Water is the highest-grossing movie of all time.
According to Cameron, the sequel, which cost an estimated US$350 million, must make at least US$2 billion to break even, although some experts say the figure is closer to US$1.5 billion.
Taking place 10 years after the events of the original, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, respectively.
The family flees from the forest to the water, seeking refuge with the Metkayina clan, when the Sky People begin hunting Jake.
As well as Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang, the film has a runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes.
Cameron plans to make three more Avatar movies.
